This page explains what personal data Authorship collects, why we collect it, who we share it with and what you can ask us to do with it.

Who we are

Authorship and Authorship Press are trading names of Humble Mind Global Limited, a company registered in England and Wales with company number 15032601.

Humble Mind Global Limited is the controller of the personal data described here. If you have a question about this policy or your data, email us at alex@humblemind.co.

What we collect

When you apply to join a cohort, we collect your name, your email address, your field or expertise, where you are with your book, anything you choose to tell us about what you know, and whether you've agreed to hear from us.

When we speak with you, for example on a call about whether the cohort fits, we may keep short notes of the conversation.

When you become a client, we also keep the details we need to deliver the programme, invoice you and keep proper accounts, such as your billing details and our correspondence.

When you subscribe to our newsletter on Substack, Substack collects and manages your details under its own privacy policy. We can see your email address and basic subscription information.

When you visit this website, we don't use cookies for advertising or tracking. We measure visits with Plausible Analytics, which counts page views without cookies and without collecting personal data. Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs, which include IP addresses, for security and to keep the site running. Pages with video previews load their thumbnail images from YouTube, which also receives your IP address.

Why we use it, and on what basis

  • To consider your application and arrange a conversation with you. This is necessary to take steps you've asked for before entering into a contract with us
  • To send you updates about the founding cohort and future cohorts. We only do this if you've ticked the box to agree. You can withdraw your consent at any time by using the unsubscribe link in any email or by emailing us
  • To deliver the programme and our services once you've joined. This is necessary to perform our contract with you
  • To keep financial and tax records. This is necessary to meet our legal obligations
  • To keep the website secure and working. This is in our legitimate interests in running a safe, reliable website

We never sell your personal data, and we don't use it for automated decisions about you.

Who we share it with

We share personal data only with the service providers we use to run Authorship, and only as far as they need it to do their job:

  • Formspree, which receives and passes on application form submissions
  • Substack, which runs our newsletter
  • Calendly, which we use to book calls with you
  • Our email platform, which we use to send emails to applicants and clients
  • Our payment provider, which processes deposits and payments. We never see or store your full card details
  • Our website host, Plausible Analytics and YouTube, as described above
  • Freelancers and contractors who help deliver the programme, such as editors and designers, when they need your details to do the work. They are bound to keep your data confidential

We may also share data where the law requires us to, for example with HMRC or our accountants.

International transfers

Some of our providers, including Formspree, Substack and Calendly, are based in the United States or store data there. Where your data is transferred outside the UK, we rely on recognised safeguards, such as the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework where the provider is certified, or the UK International Data Transfer Addendum to the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.

How long we keep it

  • If you apply and don't go on to join, we delete your application within 12 months, unless you've asked to keep hearing from us
  • If you join, we keep your client records for six years after the end of the tax year in which our work with you ends, as UK accounting rules require
  • If you've agreed to updates, we keep your email address until you unsubscribe

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to:

  • ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you
  • ask us to correct anything that's wrong or incomplete
  • ask us to delete your data
  • ask us to limit how we use it, or object to how we use it
  • ask us to send your data to you or to another organisation in a common format
  • withdraw your consent at any time, where we rely on it

To use any of these rights, email alex@humblemind.co. We'll reply within one month. There's no charge.

If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, please tell us first so we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

Changes to this policy

We'll update this page if the way we use personal data changes, and change the date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll tell people on our email list.
